This past Saturday, a 26 year old wife and mother and her 4 year old daughter were gunned down halfway between my house and the church. On Sunday night, family, friends, and neighbors gathered to remember them and mourn their loss.
We learned of the gathering earlier in the morning when members of our church prayer walked the neighborhood. We stopped by the spot where the crime occurred and talked and prayed with neighbors. One of the neighbors told us that he was planning to organize a gathering. So, I decided to attend.
When I arrived, the neighbor who told me that he was planning to hold the vigil, asked me to lead it. To be honest, I was not expecting to lead the gathering, and I was both scared and humbled. I wasn’t prepared for the task, but I knew that God would guide me. You know what, He did!
With God guiding me, I led prayers for comfort, healing, hope, justice, and reconciliation; and I was able to share the Good News of the Gospel.
Sadly, this type of violence is a more “normal” occurrence in our area of the city than I would like to admit. There is a great need for healing. There is a great need for the Gospel.
Be assured, God is working. I have been amazed by what God has been doing in and through our replant. He is most certainly at work in downtown Long Beach. I’m humbled to be able to be a part of it.
